Main duties and responsibilities
Applicants must be able to manage a technical team to provide technical support for commercial clients, teaching and research activity within the laboratories run by the School. To assist in the further developments of equipment and facilities within the School technical labs and workshops. Coordination of planned activities across the satellite areas and labs linked to CDIO.
Skills and experience needed
You will have proven professional experience of working in a laboratory/workshop environment and with students in FE or HE sector. Substantial proven experience in manufacturing and assembly of mechanical components using a variety of equipment and machines such as, Mills, Lathes, CNC, 3D printers, etc.
Substantial proven experience in reading, extracting information and creating detailed technical drawings either by hand or with the use of 3D design software. Experience studying sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to manufacture products and determine product dimensions and tolerances, as well as Experience Measuring, examining and testing completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
You will work to a high standard of accuracy neatness and safe practice including good time management, whilst maintaining industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. You will possess the ability to identify design issues and offer solutions to improve functionality and manufacturability of product, and understand of the importance of Health and Safety processes and ability to produce activity-based Risk Assessments. You will require knowledge on the use of specialist software and design related software, computer-aided design packages.
You will have strong IT skills including the use of Microsoft Office. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. In addition, you will have a good understanding of customer care and the ability to put this in to practice. You will have a positive “can do” attitude, be flexible and adaptable in approach and you’ll be motivated and able to learn new skills. You must be a good team player with a strong ethos of cooperation and supporting others, alongside the ability to create good working relationships. You will need to demonstrate strong attention to detail and good organisational and interpersonal skills.
Qualifications required
Educated with a Degree in STEM subject or related technical subject or proven equivalent work experience.
