UWE, Bristol - Science Communication Unit (SCU) - Frenchay Campus

Location: Bristol
Salary: £33,882 to £37,999 per annum, pro rata : Grade F
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 6th November 2024
Closes: 24th November 2024

The Science Communication Unit (SCU) at UWE Bristol is recognised for internationally leading research, creative approaches to practice and outstanding teaching. SCU research seeks to bring science and society closer together, and as such we have a core interest in developing research which is societally-relevant and developed in conjunction with those who practice science communication.

Our portfolio of activities is extensive, including innovative approaches to engaging diverse publics with science, which are informed by research.

We are looking for a Project Editor to join us, working on the Science for Environment Policy project, funded by the European Commission.

This project involves providing a high-quality news service for policymakers across Europe on behalf of the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) of the European Commission. This news service provides policymakers with policy-relevant insights into the latest environmental science research.

This post provides an exciting opportunity to be involved in a high-profile European project that is seeking to inform policy decisions aimed at addressing climate change and protecting the environment. Science for Environment Policy has over 20,000 subscribers across Europe and beyond.

You’ve got a background in and experience of science or environmental journalism, or a related field such as public relations. You have a strong track record of communicating complex research in written form to non-expert audiences. Experience of managing editorial processes will be valuable in this role, as would experience of managing editorial teams.

You can demonstrate experience of managing and implementing editorial processes, managing their time and that of others effectively to ensure that deadlines are met. You can build and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally with different partners and stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of communication activities. You’re experienced in selecting research studies to be featured in editorial material as well as writing and editing science or environmental science material for non-expert audiences. Experience of writing for policymakers would be advantageous.

We are looking for candidates who align to the UWE values. You’ll be supported in this role by experienced staff within the Science Communication Unit who are also involved with the Science for Environment Policy project.

This post is based at our lively Frenchay campus.

We offer a wide range of employee benefits including progressive pay rates, generous annual leave and career average pension schemes as well as retail savings, onsite nursery and opportunities for training and personal development.

We particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian or racially minoritised candidates as we are currently under-represented in this area of the organisation, however all appointments are made strictly on individual merit.

As a Disability Confident employer, we welcome applications from those who identify as having a disability.
