Fiber-polymer composites are an innovative and sustainable alternative in construction due to their light weight, excellent fatigue resistance and durability. Dr. Lulu Liu’s research group invites applications for a funded 3-year PhD position focusing on advancing these materials for structural applications, such as wind turbine blades and bridge decks. The group primarily 1) investigates the mechanical behavior of fiber-polymer composites and 2) explores sustainable practices for their reuse and recycling. Additionally, the team is interested in advancing the application of Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) in Structural Engineering.
Key Research Areas:
1. Reuse and Recycling of Composites
Developing sustainable approaches to extend the life of fiber-polymer composites at the material, member, and structural levels for second-life applications.
2. Additive Manufacturing Applications
Investigating the use of 3D printing to develop integral composite structures, such as wind turbine blades to reduce waste and develop innovative designs.
3. Fatigue behavior and Life Prediction
Analyzing fatigue degradation and damage mechanisms to develop life prediction models.
4. Behavior of Composite Joints
Evaluating the performance of bonded, bolted, and hybrid joints to improve structural ductility and safety.
Candidate Profile:
This position is ideal for candidates with a background in civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, or materials science. Applicants should demonstrate:
