We are looking for several talented and highly motivated individuals to join our international learning and teaching activities between Zhubanov University, Aktobe, Kazakhstan and Heriot-Watt University, UK at our new Aktobe Campus at Zhubanov University, Kazakhstan. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of computer science education in an international context, with a focus on hardware-software interfaces.

About Heriot-Watt University branch at Zhubanov University

Zhubanov University, with the support of the President of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, has partnered with Heriot-Watt University to establish a new HWU campus within Zhubanov University in Aktobe, Kazakhstan.

About Zhubanov University

Zhubanov Aktobe Regional University is a leading public university in Kazakhstan, located in the city of Aktobe. Founded in 1935 as a multidisciplinary classical university, it has a long and distinguished history in education and research.

About Heriot Watt

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach courses covering topics in Computational Science and Software Engineering, with a strong emphasis on hardware-software interfaces.
  • Develop and deliver lectures, tutorials, workshops, and laboratories on subjects such as modern C programming, ARM assembly, computer architecture, and embedded systems development.
  • Support undergraduate programs by carrying out assessment and moderation of coursework and examination marking as required.
  • Liaise with academic staff at Zhubanov University and Heriot-Watt University, and perform discipline-related administrative tasks.
  • Contribute to the development of teaching and scholarship in international higher education learning, with a focus on practical, hands-on experiences for students.

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
  • Strong practical experience in embedded systems development, including familiarity with modern C (C99/C11), ARM assembly, and a good understanding of computer architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with open-source tools and frameworks for embedded development.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, and a proven ability to work in diverse, international teams.
  • Enthusiasm for adapting to new teaching methodologies and curricula, with a focus on practical, hardware-oriented content.
  • Demonstrated initiative in teaching and scholarship.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues across our international partners.
  • Ability to work to deadlines.

Desirable

  • Experience in web-based learning, e.g. virtual learning environments such as Canvas, and other educational technology
  • Experience of developing/delivering innovative assessment practice
  • Appropriate academic or industrial experience in an Computer Science and/or Software Engineering.
