The Centre for Healthcare Science at the University of Essex - working in collaboration with NHS England East of England – is looking to recruit a Health Science lecturer in the field of Life Science and Diagnostic Pathology. This post will be central to the development of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including the new BSc Biomedical Science Apprenticeship and the introduction of a Scientist Training Programme (STP), as well as identifying and designing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) modules, in diagnostic pathology that will be vital to supporting diagnostic services in these fields in the NHS. This is an exciting new post supporting the commitment by the University to help develop sustainable diagnostic pathological and life science workforces across the East of England region.

In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate course development work there will be an opportunity to work closely with the University’s Outreach Team and other outreach organisations around the East of England to inform and encourage young people to be interested in science and pathological sciences as careers in the NHS. This will include leading and participating in sessions with target schools and designing innovative events.

We are looking for a scientist who is committed, self-motivated, and has a passion for training and teaching, with a solid understanding and experience of working in diagnostic pathological sciences in the NHS at a Senior Scientist level (Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist) in one of the following life science specialisms: Haematology, Immunology, Biochemistry (Blood Sciences), Microbiology, Genomics, Histopathology, Histocompatibility. We are looking for enterprising and innovative approaches to the way the University can offer training for NHS diagnostic pathology scientists to enable them to provide their NHS services.

The role will allow you to work alongside a wide range of academics in the University from across all diagnostic pathology and life science disciplines. You will also have the opportunity to develop and work closely with local NHS trust training leads in diagnostic pathology to help to support the training of scientists.

Skills and qualifications required

The successful candidate will have a relevant doctoral level degree in life sciences or equivalent professional experience or practice, as well as Undergraduate and/or post graduate qualification in a relevant Life science discipline. You will also hold a HCPC registration either as Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist in a life science discipline. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate is also required.

The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to complement and continuously enhance the department/school’s education strengths and areas of planned development. You will also have a clear understanding of how students learn both generally and within their subject/disciplinary area(s) and the ability to apply this understanding to their own practice.
