An exciting opportunity has arisen for a bioinformatician with an interest for the development and implementation of clinical bioinformatics solutions within the Oxford Molecular Diagnostics Centre. The OMDC is a clinically accredited laboratory that operates in close collaboration with the NHS Oxford University Hospitals. Its focus is to develop, validate and provide novel genomics technologies for clinical trials and translational research, including the development of innovative and reliable bespoke bioinformatics solutions.
You will analyse next generation sequencing data from a range of genomic research projects, encompassing targeted, exome and whole genome sequencing from different sequencing platforms and also from different types of clinical material (fresh tissue, formalin fixed paraffin embedded, plasma DNA etc).
You will apply analysis methods and where appropriate, assess existing tools and/or develop novel methods and algorithms, in collaboration with colleagues, to answer specific biological questions. You will work in HIPAA-compliant AWS environments, ensuring quality assurance, validating bioinformatics solutions, deployment and maintenance of the data processing pipelines, as well as data integrity, as per agreed best practices related to clinical bioinformatics.
The post will be based in the Oxford Molecular Diagnostics Centre (OMDC), John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DU
About you
You will hold a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or similar discipline (candidates without PhD but with postgraduate diploma in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or similar discipline are also encouraged to apply, as, depending on qualification and experience may be considered for Grade 7 post). You will have proven experience of analysing next-generation sequencing data, in applied DNA sequence analysis or directly comparable field and programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, C/C++,R or similar. You will have experience with Unix/Linux Command Line. The ability to assess new developments in bioinformatics and apply them efficiently is essential. Completion or completing Scientific Training Programme (or equivalent certification) in Bioinformatics/Health Informatics, would be advantageous.
