About the role:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London, is seeking a Workshop Technician to join its Research Design and Manufacturing (RDM) facility.

Supporting the ground-breaking research undertaken across the Departments Academic disciplines, the RDM Workshop team is a key component in our research having real-world impacts on commercial, medical and environmental endeavours. With over 50 Academics and more than 280 research staff and students working on a range of topics from medical implants & surgical techniques to new-age engine & fuel technologies, the demand for manufacturing high-quality components has never been higher!

What you would be doing:

You will work within the RDW Workshop liaising with Senior Workshop and Laboratory Technicians, Academics, Researchers and suppliers to provide a comprehensive machining service. You will use knowledge of traditional and modern engineering techniques to interpret project designs for fabrication. This will include:

  • working as part of the Department’s Research Design and Manufacturing Workshop team to provide machining and traditional engineering support for our groundbreaking research.
  • engaging with Academics and Researchers to interpret and provide feasible design solutions for components, sub-assemblies, and whole assemblies.
  • producing and interpreting engineering drawings in CAD format.
  • producing CNC code from CAM packages

What we are looking for:

Our ideal candidate has completed a recognised apprenticeship / HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), and have an NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant accredited workplace.

You will also:

  • have experience of traditional engineering machines, principals and techniques including in hand tools.
  • be able to use CNC machines and Wire EDM machines, and understand their applications.  
  • be able to demonstrate an appreciation of health & safety in a workshop environment.

The postholder will engage with research across a broad range of engineering disciplines, supporting the design and creation of components from rigs to test sustainable and alternative fuels, to testing materials for surgical use. As part of the Technical Services team, made up of more than 30 specialist technicians and engineers, you will be part of a community of experts in their fields, contributing to the Department’s research excellence.
