The James Watt School of Engineering is looking to recruit a Research Associate/Fellow to make a leading contribution to the EPSRC UK Hub for Quantum Enabled Position Navigation and Timing (QEPNT), part of the UK’s flagship National Quantum Technology Programme. Working with Dr Kevin Gallacher and Professors Marc Sorel and Douglas Paul the focus of this post is to develop a silicon photonic integrated circuit platform that consists of heterogeneously integrated III-V gain chips, MEMS vapour cells and detectors to reduce the size weight power and cost of atomic devices such as clocks and magnetometers. To achieve the ambitious goals of the hub, such as delivery of chip-scale optical frequency combs and atomic frequency references will require a broad suite of expertise ranging from electromagnetic device simulation, nano/micro fabrication and experimental characterisation. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

QEPNT will lead and support the community, ecosystem and technologies required for the UK to be a global leader in future position, navigation and timing (PNT) systems. The vision is to deliver atomic clocks, quantum inertial sensors, single-photon LiDAR sensors and quantum-classical hybrid sensors to create practical systems for resilient PNT applications. To build the UK community and ecosystem, QEPNT will unite experts from academia, industry and Government agencies to ensure the delivery of technologies for national security, critical national infrastructure, aerospace, connected and autonomous vehicles, maritime, energy and other applications. The QEPNT hub includes academic partners from Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Imperial, Loughborough, Queen’s Belfast and Strathclyde, along with NPL, and over 30 UK companies.

For appointment at Grade 8, the candidate is expected to perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, collaborating and publishing research, and mentoring colleagues, establish and sustain a track record of independent and joint published research to establish and maintain your expert reputation in the subject area and develop/implement a suitable research strategy.

Informal enquiries about the role are welcomed, and should be addressed to Professor Douglas Paul (Douglas.Paul@glasgow.ac.uk) in the first instance.
