The Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) seeks to appoint an ambitious and highly motivated Innovation Fellow in Conservation Science to join an exciting new research programme, the E3 Sharing Space for Nature Initiative, funded by Research England. In this role you will develop and implement innovative approaches for creating, monitoring and funding conservation area and nature recovery networks, providing guidance and advice for local and national governments, environmental NGOs and the private sector. You will also work with colleagues to bid for and deliver consultancy tenders. You will have a strong research profile and background in either:

  1. biodiversity metrics and monitoring,
  2. spatial planning for conservation and connectivity, or
  3. environmental/ecological economics.

Your profile will demonstrate your commitment to conservation impact, your ability to work in a team and meet project deadlines, and a willingness to work with stakeholders and mainstream research.

Each fellowship is funded until the end of the E3 project in July 2029, so it is our intention to extend the initial contracts to the end of the project subject to a successful mid-project review.

As an Innovation Fellow you can expect to be involved with the following:

  • responsible for implementing the innovation component of the E3 ‘Sharing Space for Nature’ initiative, working on short- and long-term consultancy projects that use the latest research to meet the needs of a range of businesses and organisations.
  • playing a key role in the new E3 ‘Sharing Space for Nature’ initiative by developing/bidding for and implementing consultancy contracts for governments, NGOs and the private sector.
  • publishing state-of-the-art research, in collaboration with DICE colleagues, project partners and postgraduate students, which identifies research gaps and outlines new methods and approaches for mainstreaming E3 research.

What you will bring to the role:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in conservation science or a relevant subject.
  • Strong track record of research publications relevant to biodiversity conservation, as evidenced by citation record (e.g. in Web of Knowledge or Scopus), commensurate with the number of years since PhD completion.
  • Specialist knowledge of, and research experience in, a field relevant to biodiversity metrics and monitoring, spatial planning for conservation and connectivity, or environmental economics.

What we can offer in return:

As a member of our team, you can expect a friendly, open and collaborative working environment and support in your development and wellbeing. You'll enjoy a range of great staff benefits including:

  • Hybrid working options allowing a flexible blend of office and home working (to be agreed in line with business needs)
  • 43 days' leave per year (personal leave, bank holidays and additional days allocated for the Christmas period, pro rata for part-time staff)
  • Excellent pension scheme with generous employer contributions
  • Corporate employee-funded healthcare plan, in partnership with Benenden Health
