Chair in Combinatorics (Teaching and Research)

About the Role

Applications are invited for the Chair of Combinatorics in the School of Mathematical Sciences. The Chair of Combinatorics will make significant contributions to the intellectual life of the School and the Centre for Combinatorics, Algebra and Number Theory. They will lead the Centre by example with research in the topics of polytopes, matroids, hyperplane arrangements, Lie and Coxeter combinatorics, Hopf algebras, and tropical geometry, and their applications such as phylogenetics and robotic motion planning. They will provide direction that will enable the Centre’s success, deliver high quality teaching which enhances student experience, as well as contributing as a senior academic to the wider achievements of the School and Institution.

About the School

The School is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, which comprises of five schools and two institutes. The Faculty’s student population has grown in recent years, both within the UK and overseas, and its research profile has strengthened considerably.

The School has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes, and aims to continue to expand its research profile as well as its study programmes across both UG and PGT. This position will be based in the Centre for Combinatorics, Algebra and Number Theory. Other Centres include the Centre for Data Science, Statistics and Probability, the Centre for Dynamical Systems, Statistical Physics and Complex Systems, the Centre for Geometry, Analysis and Gravitation, and the Centre for Mathematical Education.

The School comprises 85 academic staff and associate lecturers, 16 research assistants and 14 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 80 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates and 100 master level students.

The post is based at Mile End in London. It is full-time and permanent with an expected start date of September 2025. Professorial starting salary is competitive, dependant on skills and experience, starting from £77,230 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.
