The Department of Physics seeks to appoint a motivated Research Fellow within the Elementary Particle Physics (EPP) Group at the University of Warwick. The successful candidate will work on the BUTTON-30 and BUTTON-1kton detectors in the Neutrino Physics Group. This position is supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and the UK Research Innovation (UKRI). The post us funded until 29 June 2025, with the possibility of extension.

The successful candidate will work with Dr Steven Boyd and Dr Ben Richards on the BUTTON-30 and BUTTON-1kton detectors. These detectors take the form of water Cerenkov tanks, sited in the Boulby mine in the UK. The detectors are designed to test new technologies and filling materials for later use in future neutrino and dark matter experiments. BUTTON-30 is in the construction phase, with Warwick responsible for the development, assembly and testing of an array of calibration devices. In addition, Warwick has significant involvement in the development of the data acquisition system. The successful candidate will be expected to help deliver the calibration system and analyse the data for BUTTON-30. BUTTON-1kton is in the planning stages and the successful candidate will be expected to help with studies to define the detector design.

About You  

The ideal candidate will hold, or be about to hold, a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics. Expertise in neutrino physics is preferred but not required. Experience in simulation and development of calibration analysis strategies for neutrino physics experiments would be an advantage. Experience in building and operating DAQ systems would be helpful.

The ideal candidate would have experience in C++ and Python.

The applicant will have strong communication skills and will be capable of working both independently and as part of a research team. The candidate should expect to spend time at the Boulby mine in Yorkshire helping with the installation and commissioning program for BUTTON-30.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure.
