About the Role

For informal enquiries, please contact Julia Brettschneider (Reader in Statistics) at Julia.Brettschneider@warwick.ac.uk.

Fixed Term full-time position for 6 months, 1.0 FTE. Start date to be agreed with the successful candidate.

We are looking for a talented and versatile statistician or applied mathematician to work as part of a small interdisciplinary research team at the new Centre for Applications of Mathematical and Computing Sciences (CAMaCS).

Your role will involve undertaking research to support a specific externally funded project (details of the project are below). You will assist colleagues from the Department of Statistics and a CAMaCS Innovation Research Associate to deliver the successful execution of the project.

The research project is:

Development of an algorithm for identifying bacterial species from quantitative bacterial metabolic kinetic profiles – a feasibility study.

The project will be supervised by Julia Brettschneider (Department of Statistics) and includes a CAMaCS Innovation Research Associate. The project is focused on studying the feasibility of identifying the bacterial species causing urinary tract infection (UTI) in clinical samples, including cases of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It is using a novel type of rapid biosensor technology recently developed by Andrea Dsouza (as part of her PhD thesis supervised by Chrystala Constantinidou and Jérôme Charmet) and her supervisors at WMS. In this project we aim to develop a data visualisation tool and algorithms to support the diagnostic processes.

About You

The ideal candidate will:

  • Possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within the research area. In particular: the project requires descriptive statistics including data quality assessment and visualisation, mathematical modelling of growth curves, and inferential statistics and modelling including familiarity with testing errors (specificity and sensitivity).
  • Have demonstrable competence in coding (preferably R, R markdown, alternatively Python). Experience with R shiny and writing apps is a plus but not a requirement.
  • Have an interest and willingness to learn about the scientific context (bacterial growth and antimicrobial resistance).
  • Have strong research potential with the ability or potential to publish high quality work in relevant fields.
  • Have demonstrable experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research skills.
  • Have an interest in equal opportunity issues as they may impact on areas of research content.

For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.
