The Leverhulme Trust - Early Career Fellowship, 2025

The Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship is for outstanding scholars at an early stage of their academic careers with a proven record of research. It is designed to support the career development of those building an academic career within the UK, who have not held a permanent academic position in a UK university or comparable UK institution. In addition to these criteria, applicants must:

1. hold a doctorate (see below for details); and
2. either
   1. hold a degree (any degree) awarded by a UK Higher Education Institution or
   2. hold a non-permanent academic position in the UK

Brunel University London has a successful track record securing these prestigious fellowships and incorporating fellows into our permanent staff. We hold a selection process to decide who will be put forward to apply to the funder. You should not approach the Leverhulme Trust at this stage.

To submit an expression of interest to Brunel, please:

1. Consult the Leverhulme Trust website (Leverhulme ECF) to ensure you are eligible
2. Secure the support of a member of Brunel staff who is willing to act as your mentor (search here)
3. Request references from up to three academic referees.
4. Complete our online application Form (you will be asked to log in or register with Brunel)

You must complete the application form no later than 4pm GMT, Friday 15^th November 2024. The form includes:

• the name of the Brunel staff member who has agreed to act as your mentor
• an abstract summarising your research for a general audience (maximum 100 words)
• a statement of your proposed research (maximum two pages)
• a CV including education, publications, awards, dissertation title and examiners (maximum one page)
• up to three academic references. Either attach your references to the application form, or ask referees to email copies of reference letters directly to jenny.laing@brunel.ac.uk by the deadline above.

THE SELECTION PROCESS AND IMPORTANT DATES

Selection will be made on the basis of the submitted application materials; no interviews will be held. All applications are considered in a two-stage selection process in which a panel of senior academic staff select candidates to be put forward to the Leverhulme Trust. The panel assesses applications based on the quality of the proposed research project, its relevance to Brunel’s research priorities, and the applicant’s potential to produce published work which is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour. The panel also considers the Leverhulme Trust’s emphasis on the originality and significance of the project, the ability to judge and take appropriate risks and the removal of barriers between traditional disciplines. Any applications received after 4pm GMT on 15^th November will not be considered.

We aim to inform applicants of initial decisions by 25^th November 2024. Candidates selected to proceed will then work closely with their mentor and the Brunel Research Support and Development Office to prepare a full application for the second stage of the selection process, which must be submitted by 6^th January 2025.

Applications selected at this stage must be submitted to the University by 7^th February 2025 for internal approval, prior to the Leverhulme Trust submission date of the 20^th February 2025.
