We seek a talented post-doctoral scientist to carry out research to better understand how the atmospheric circulation responds to tipping points in the North Atlantic climate system, and to examine oceanic precursors of tipping points. This research is a component of the international research projects, TipESM (https://www.tipesm.eu/) and OptimESM (https://optimesm-he.eu/). The post will be based in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, within the Department of Meteorology.
You will improve our understanding of how the atmosphere responds to tipping points in the North Atlantic, such as a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), and explore its downstream impacts, including potential impacts on other tipping elements of the climate system. You will also explore how the atmosphere can influence societal or ecological tipping points in collaboration with project partners, and explore oceanic precursors to tipping points.
Please note that candidates are required to be based in Reading for the entire duration of the contract. The position is available for 31 months with the possibility of further extension.
