As a Kitchen Porter/Cleaning Operative, you will play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of our busy catering outlets, which serve over 3,000 resident students as well as a large number of non-resident students, and university staff. You will ensure that all heavy-duty equipment and kitchen areas are consistently cleaned and maintained to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Regularly clean heavy-duty kitchen equipment, appliances, and canopies across all sites.
  • Clean kitchen walls and floors as needed, ensuring adherence to food hygiene standards.
  • Empty and sanitize refuse bins in a timely manner.
  • Assist with stock handling, including unloading deliveries to central stores.
  • Perform all cleaning duties in compliance with COSHH and current food hygiene regulations.
  • Prioritize health and safety by following kitchen safety basics and ensuring compliance with the university’s policies.
  • Foster positive relationships with customers and team members, attending relevant meetings when required.
  • Promote and support the university’s equal opportunities policy and sustainability goals in line with Strategy 2030.
  • Carry out additional tasks as needed, ensuring all duties align with the role’s responsibilities.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A background in cleaning or portering, preferably within a large, interdependent department or complex organization.
  • Experience working in the hospitality sector, specifically in kitchen operations, is essential.
  • Ability to prioritize kitchen cleanliness and due diligence processes, ensuring deep cleans are completed when required.
  • Strong commitment to delivering exceptional customer service, working within a team to meet financial and operational targets.

Whilst this role is supporting a weekly outlet, we expect all our staff to be available to work between 6:30 am and 12:30 am Monday to Sunday, with shifts on a Rota basis, and you will be an integral part of this team. 

This is a permanent role, working 37 hours, and we’ve got some really generous overtime rates to make overtime worth your while.

Any shifts after 8 pm attract an additional one-fifth of the hourly rate and overtime is paid at time and a half; with double time on a Sunday.
