We are delighted to be recruiting two new permanent colleagues to join the flourishing Department of Cultural, Media and Visual Studies in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies at the University of Nottingham. They will join a thoroughly interdisciplinary community of scholars with global perspectives and approaches and contribute to a vibrant and collegial research-led learning environment. In 2025-26, we are launching a completely new suite of undergraduate programmes aiming to position our world-leading research at the centre of the learning experience and prepare our students to be critical, active and adaptive participants in the increasingly complex and technologized cultural, creative and media environments of the future.

To help deliver these exciting new programmes, we seek applicants with research and/or teaching expertise in one or more of the following three broad areas, ideally with knowledge and experience in the listed sub-areas, and ideally with perspectives that look beyond the global North:

1. International Media and Communications:

  • Platform Studies
  • Digital Cultures
  • Screen Studies

2. Critical Theory and Cultural Studies:

  • Memory Studies
  • Material Culture
  • Sound Studies

3. Cultural and Creative Industries:

  • Heritage and Museum Studies
  • Creative Labour
  • Sustainability

One of the two posts is a permanent Teaching Associate in Media and Cultural Studies who will provide teaching and curriculum leadership at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The role holder will have knowledge and teaching experience of media and cultural studies, including teaching these subjects at Master’s level to small group seminars. They will also have a proven track record of curriculum development and design in these areas. Experience of and interest in practice-based teaching methods would be particularly advantageous.

Our School thrives through the different ideas and experiences of colleagues, who come from a mix of cultures and backgrounds. We strive to foster a welcoming, inspiring and supportive workplace. We are seeking applications from candidates whose background, experience and identity broadens and enhances the diversity of our existing team and would especially welcome applications from members of groups who are currently underrepresented in the School and UK Higher Education more widely. We understand that having a mix of perspectives, lived experiences and approaches to teaching and research enhances our day-to-day work and enriches our School community.

Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent in relevant subject areas (e.g. Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Communication Studies, Cultural/Creative Industries) and have previous experience of teaching at Higher Education level. You should have detailed knowledge of teaching methods and techniques and growing practical experience of application of teaching skills and techniques to university courses.

The post is offered on a full time (36.25 hours per week), permanent contract. Job-share arrangements may be considered.
