The Research Centre for Parallel Computing (CPC) at the University of Westminster is looking for a Research Fellow in Cloud Computing to carry out research, primarily within the EU and UKRI funded Horizon Europe Swarmchestrate (Application-level Swarm-based Orchestration Across the Cloud-to-Edge Continuum: https://www.swarmchestrate.eu/) and HARPOCRATES (Federated Data Sharing and Analysis for Social Utility: https://harpocrates-project.eu/) projects. The researcher will carry out tasks in relation to the development of novel decentralised edge-fog-cloud orchestration solutions, specifically targeting and supporting application developers, and will support local authorities and healthcare organisations in the development of secure cloud-based solutions. Many aspects of the work will be related to further developing the MiCADO (https://micado-scale.eu/) application-level cloud orchestrator and extending it towards decentralisation, fog and edge platforms, and AI-based orchestration. Successful candidates will also be expected to lead tasks or work packages, and coordinate the writing of project deliverables and research papers related to the projects.
Expected experience includes knowledge of and experience with cloud middleware and infrastructures, container technologies (such as Docker and Kubernetes), good programming skills (preferably Java and Python), and user-level knowledge of the Linux operating system. Experience in EU or national research projects and a track record of publications are also required.
The Centre for Parallel Computing is one of the leading research centres in distributed and parallel computation technologies. In particular, the CPC is engaged in research in Distributed Computing Infrastructures such as edge-fog-cloud ecosystems, specifically concentrating on the automated deployment, orchestration and scalability of a large variety of applications in such environments. The CPC has a well-established track record of securing research funding in large-scale collaborative research projects, leading and contributing to more than 15 projects in the last 10 years. From January 2024 the CPC acts as scientific coordinators in the EU/UKRI Swarmchestrate project that will run until December 2026.
