Part-Time and Full-Time Tutor/Lecturer in English Language Development and Academic English

Reporting to: The Principal and Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs)

Accessible to: Associate HoD/Managing Director

Opportunity to join a growing Academic English Department in a well-regarded Higher Education College in the heart of East London.

Introduction:

Founded in 2003, ICON College of Technology and Management is a private higher education institution adjacent to the City of London and around 1400 students including in BSc/BA (Hons) Top-Up courses. The College recently signed a partnership agreement with Bishop Grosseteste University for a period of five years to deliver validated approved BSc/BA Hons with Foundation Courses.

Job Role:

The successful candidate will join the College’s English Department, which is committed to raising standards of English (writing, reading, speaking and listening) amongst the student body and teaching academic units.  If successful, you will initially teach Academic English to a Foundation Year students and range of first-semester classes, with the aim of boosting students’ proficiency in English in order that they can meet the demands of academic study and succeed in College life.

Core duties:

  • Teaching to prescribed lecture materials and following an existing Scheme of Work;
  • Teaching Academic English/Units to prescribed syllabus in Foundation Year Course:
    • Academic Writing
    • Critical Engagement
    • Critical Thinking
    • Academic English
  • Running workshops and support classes for students requiring supplementary English Language provision.
  • Leading start-of-semester Academic Inductions for new ICON students.

Core competencies/experience:

  • MA in relevant subject, preferably in English
  • Proven experience of teaching English Language/ Academic English at university level for a UK Higher Education Provider.
  • Proven teaching experience with ESL/EFL/EAL students, with relevant qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience teaching ESOL examinations, particularly IELTS
  • Experience working in the Higher Education sector and with adult learners
  • Knowledge and experience of teaching University courses
  • Knowledge of Higher National Diploma courses and BTEC qualifications (desirable)

Person specification:

  • Strong subject knowledge;
  • Reliable and committed;
  • Ability to work as part of a team, and to integrate into the College community, including communicating clearly with the English Department.
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to existing College structures and procedures. 

Benefits:

The College will offer a competitive salary in the range of up to £42,349 - £43,501, depending on qualifications and prior experience.  In addition, there will be 33 days holiday (including 8 bank holidays) per annum. During Christmas time, staff can either take three days holiday or have tasks assigned by their line manager. A range of work-life balance opportunities and family-friendly negotiated working arrangements are available. A 5-8% private pension contribution may also be made by the College.
