The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment is seeking to make a substantial investment in new full-time MSc by Research and PhD studentships enrolling in January 2025. We are looking for students with expertise that matches our areas of research excellence. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the project’s first supervisor to discuss their interest (and the level of the project’s bench fee) before making an application.

Applications must be for PhD; applications for MSc by Research only will not be considered

To apply you must:

  • have at least a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1) or equivalent in a subject relevant to the proposed research project. Equivalent professional experience may also be accepted.
  • if you are not from a majority English-speaking country or have not studied at a UK university before, you must provide proof of Internet-based IELTS Academic at a minimum overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each element (or equivalent qualification). Note that the qualification must be dated no earlier than 30 June 2023 and must be submitted with your application – it cannot be added later  

References are not required with the application but will be required for shortlisted applicants and must be provided before the interview. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that references are submitted.

Interviews will take place online on 13, 16 & 17 December 2024

Applicants invited for interview will be informed as soon as possible after the closing date. If you have not heard from us by 4 weeks after the closing date, your application has been unsuccessful.

Period of funding: Three years for PhD studentships, one year for MSc by Research studentships that may be extended for a further two years towards a PhD, subject to student’s performance and funding availability. 

Fees:  Home tuition fee for the period of funding

Stipend: £21,237 pa for the period of funding

Tuition Fees and cost of living: International students will be required to pay the difference between the Home and International tuition fee each year (£13,000 approx. for 2024-25)

Additional Funding Information

All research students in the Faculty are charged a bench fee each year, which is not covered by the studentship. The amount depends on the resources required for the project; the minimum is £500 per annum full-time.
