Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scientist to work on an MRC funded project entitled ‘Defining the role of monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages in the pathophysiology of endometriosis to accelerate clinical translation’.

Endometriosis is a chronic disorder that affects 190 million women world-wide. Endometriosis can cause debilitating chronic pelvic pain and infertility, there is no cure, no biomarkers and new approaches to therapy are urgently needed.

The Greaves lab is focused on the role of monocytes and macrophages in the pathophysiology of endometriosis with the goal of identifying new ways to diagnose the condition and design new therapeutic strategies to treat the disorder.

The group uses a range of approaches that include examination of well-characterized human biospecimens, a mouse model of endometriosis (including use of genetically modified mice), and appropriate cell models.

The post is a fixed-term, full-time position. The post is available from beginning December 2024 and is tenable for 18 months.

About You 

The post holder will be based within at the Division of Biomedical Sciences, Warwick Medical School at the University of Warwick where they will work within a team led by Dr. Erin Greaves (Principal Investigator) and collaborate with Dr Christian Becker (Co-I), Associate Professor and Co-Director of Endometriosis Care Centre, Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford as well as with members of teams led by other PIs at the Division of Biomedical Sciences.

The position will be largely based at the Clinical Sciences Research Laboratory (CSRL) based at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire site. CSRL is a purpose-built Institute dedicated to translational science and has a strong reproductive health focus.

Applications are welcome from scientists with a PhD in biological sciences with experience in single cell analysis and bioinformatics, flow cytometry, molecular biology and in vitro functional assays. A background in immunology and /or reproductive biology would be an advantage. The post holder will be expected to have excellent communication skills, to assist in supervision of junior staff and students and to collate and present findings at meetings and conferences as well as in the form of manuscripts.

The post holder will be expected to conduct high quality research using human peripheral blood and peritoneal fluid perform deep phenotyping using scRNA-Seq and bioinformatics, and a wide range of molecular and cellular techniques. The candidate will also be expected to participate in the collection and archiving of human tissue, which will require some flexible working.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure.
