Teaching Associate - German (Fixed term)

We are delighted to be seeking to recruit a Teaching Associate to join the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies at the University of Nottingham.  

The School is a leading centre for the study of modern languages and cultures, offering first degrees (BA) and both taught and research postgraduate degrees, delivering internationally recognised research across our departments. Within the Department, the German Section provides a wide range of teaching and research expertise, across disciplines including history, literary studies, linguistics, translation studies, memory studies, visual cultures, and history of ideas across the German-speaking world.

The primary purpose of the role will be to teach in the German Section, in the areas of German linguistics, linguistics for students of all languages, and German language, all at undergraduate levels. The balance between these parts of the role will depend on the skills and experience of the post-holder and needs of the School.

The post-holder will be expected to make key contributions to planning, convening, and delivering teaching, including associated assessment duties, and with responsibility for syllabus design and content. The role-holder will also be expected to supervise undergraduate dissertations in areas appropriate to their expertise and qualification. Modules include Language, Meaning, Variation and Change (Year 1), The Language of German Media - Linguistic and Journalistic Perspectives (Year 2), and Language and Social Media in Germany and beyond (final year).

A range of administrative duties to support the operation of the School will also be undertaken, which may include acting as a personal tutor.

Applicants must hold a PhD (complete or thesis pending) or equivalent experience in German and/or linguistics or another relevant specialism or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience. Familiarity with the UK’s or another English-speaking University sector is desirable.  

This is a full-time (36.25 hours), fixed term post, starting as soon as possible in January 2025 until 26th June 2026. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered if prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
