The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law (MPI-CSL) is inviting applications for its Barbara Huber Scholarship Program. The Research Scholarship program is open to outstanding academics from foreign research institutions for particularly innovative research projects that contribute significantly to scientific progress through new perspective, questions, or findings in the subject areas of Criminology, Public Law, or Criminal Law. Each department may award one Barbara Huber Scholarship per calendar year.
Barbara Huber (1935–2018) was an outstanding legal scholar and recognized specialist in English law and the broader common law legal system. She was a Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg i. Br., now Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law, where she carried out numerous large-scale comparative law projects.
The Institute
The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law is a growing European center for research in criminology, public security matters, criminal law, and fundamental legal research. The Institute is part of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science – Germany’s flagship research organization.
The Institute, with its approximately 150 employees, is located in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), a dynamic university city with a 900-year history. The city in the trinational border region (Germany, Switzerland, and France) impresses newcomers with its high quality of life and international flair. Freiburg ranked third on Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2022” list of the top ten city destinations in the world.
The Scholarship
The scholarships are awarded for a research stay at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law for a period of two to a maximum of six months. The scholarship amounts to EUR 1,365.00 per month for doctoral candidates, EUR 2,500.00 for postdocs, and EUR 3,000.00 for professors and experienced researchers. In addition to the monthly scholarship, a grant can also be awarded for expenses in connection with participation in an academic event or further research activities in Germany or other (European) countries.
