About the school or department

The Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) (www.ccri.ac.uk) at the University of Gloucestershire is the largest specialist rural research centre in the UK, having expertise in all aspects of research in policy and planning for the countryside and the environment of the UK, Europe and further afield. We are a vibrant research community achieving high recognition internationally and in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) appraisal.

About the role

The CCRI is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to support the delivery of various UK government-funded social science projects related to fisheries. This will include an evaluation of the new Fisheries Management Plans (FMP) programme, with a particular focus on how the programme has engaged with the fishing sector in developing FMPs. In addition, the Research Fellow will work on the Fishing Lives project, which is co-developing a new social survey of fishermen with Defra and the fishing sector. The post holder will also work on other social science projects that could be focused on fisheries, farming, forestry and/or the environment.

The post holder will be working with Associate Professor Julie Urquhart and other members of the project team. The role will involve literature reviews, application of both qualitative research methods (interviews, workshops) and quantitative methods (surveys). The post may involve some travel within the UK to conduct fieldwork (interviews, workshops) in fishing ports, if needed.

This post would suit a post-graduate with proven social science skills, particularly qualitative methods and analysis, and survey design. An interest in fisheries social science, participatory approaches to research for policy and practice, and policy evaluation would be an advantage.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to academic life of the CCRI. The role will also involve writing academic papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals, presenting the research outcomes at conferences, and working alongside other research staff.

The University is committed to building a diverse and inclusive staff community and welcomes applications from currently under-represented sections of our workforce. We are proud to be a Disability Confident Leader, guaranteeing an interview to everyone who meets the definition of disability set out in the Equality Act 2010 and the essential criteria contained within the person specification.
