Director of Studies (DOS) for English Learning Centre

Jinan University - University of Birmingham Joint Institute – Information for English Learning Centre (ELC)

Overview:

The Joint Institute requires a DOS who will deliver agreed English Language outcomes and enhance its English Language learning environment.

The English Learning Centre (ELC) team requires a leader who will enable teachers to develop professionally both individually and as a team. 

Candidates should:

  • Hold a post-graduate degree (PhD preferable) in English Language teaching or Applied Linguistics, with extensive experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in English Language and/or Linguistics and/or education.
  • Have a proven record of teaching excellence, and relevant experience in teaching EAP, ESP and content-based courses at tertiary level.
  • Have excellent management, communication, negotiation, team building, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with Board of Directors (BoD) recruit qualified teachers who fit the ethos of J-BJI;
  • In conjunction with Administration staff, schedule teaching and Clinic (student consultation) hours for each teacher;
  • Observe each teacher’s class once every semester; prepare reports on these observations for BoD;
  • Oversee student evaluation of teachers; prepare reports on these for BoD
  • Chair ELC semestral Exam Boards; present results to university-wide Exam Board;
  • Monitor students’ official IELTS results; produce a report on these for teachers and BoD on a semestral basis;
  • Attend BoD meetings as required;
  • Attend JNU, UoB, and J-BJI meetings as required;
  • Develop and modify as required long-term plans for the improvement of English Language provision at J-BJI.
  • Support ELC team member’s professional development
  • Create a dedicated and unified ELC team

Jinan University- University of Birmingham Joint Institute (J-BJI)

J-BJI is a ‘Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools’ organization approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2016. Currently, J-BJI offers four undergraduate programs: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Economic and Statistics, and Economics. The four programs offered by J-BJI focus on integrating knowledge with application, the cultivation of mathematical and economic professionals in cross- disciplinarily fields, and excellence in the fields of social science and natural science. The primary aim of these programs is to cultivate high-level talents who are equipped with solid mathematical skills, global vision, strong competitiveness and innovation, and English language proficiency.
