Project title: High-resolution multi-physics topology optimisation
Supervisory Team: Prof. Ali Elham
Project description:
Topology optimisation is one of the most powerful engineering design technologies. It is superior to shape and size optimisation as it can theoretically create an optimum object from scratch. There is an ever-growing interest in using topology optimisation in industries for different design problems. The aim of this project is to develop a technology enabling high-fidelity, high-resolution, 3D topology optimisation for multi-physics problems including thermo-fluid and fluid-structure interaction. In this project we will extend our in-house aerodynamic topology optimisation code (based on OpenFoam) for multi-physics problems and apply it to a few different test cases, including thermal management system design for electric ground and flight vehicles.
We are seeking a person with an MSc. in aerospace/mechanical engineering or a closely related field with experience in CFD code development, optimisation and high-performance computing. Both UK and international students are welcome to apply.
You will join a leading Engineering Faculty with an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. In September 2013 an Athena SWAN Bronze award was received by the School of Engineering in recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering.
The Faculty offers exceptional research facilities in the areas of fluids, structures and their interactions, including a new world-class fluid dynamics facilities complex in the Boldrewood Engineering Campus, complete with a 138m towing tank.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Prof. Ali Elham, a.elham@soton.ac.uk, +44 (0) 238059 6044.
At the University of Southampton, we value diversity and equality. The University recognises that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will also be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness. Both the University of Southampton and Chemistry are proud to hold Athena Swan Silver Awards.
Entry Requirements
A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).
Closing date: 31 December 2024. Applications will be considered in the order that they are received, the position will be considered filled when a suitable candidate has been identified.
Funding: We offer a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Bursaries and Scholarships. For more information please visit PhD Scholarships | Doctoral College | University of Southampton Funding will be awarded on a rolling basis, so apply early for the best opportunity to be considered.
