Senior Research Associate in the Atmospheric Impacts of a Future Hydrogen Economy (2 posts)

Lancaster University - Lancaster Environment Centre

Location: Lancaster
Salary: £39,347 to £44,263
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 12th September 2024
Closes: 30th September 2024
Job Ref: 0913-24

Location: Bailrigg, Lancaster, UK

Full time, indefinite with end date

Interview date: To be confirmed

We seek to appoint two Senior Postdoctoral Research Associates at the Lancaster Environment Centre to quantify the current and future atmospheric budgets of hydrogen in contribution to the Horizon Europe-funded HYDRA project. The HYDRA project addresses the atmospheric, climate and environmental impacts of a future hydrogen economy and is a collaboration between partners in Italy, Spain, Greece, Belgium and the UK. The project will generate new scenarios for hydrogen usage and leakage, and these positions will be responsible for quantifying the atmospheric impacts through the development and application of global atmospheric models.

Position 1 (Tropospheric) will focus on quantifying the current and future hydrogen budget in the troposphere, and on improving understanding of the highly uncertain microbial soil sink, which dominates removal of hydrogen from the atmosphere.

Position 2 (Stratospheric) will focus on quantifying the corresponding impacts on stratospheric composition and on ozone hole recovery and will explore the climate impacts of future hydrogen scenarios.

You should have (or be about to complete) a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, meteorology or a related quantitative discipline. You should have experience in developing and running numerical models, and in data analysis. Experience with global atmospheric models, atmospheric chemistry schemes, and model evaluation against observational datasets would be an advantage. You should demonstrated independence, good communication skills and a willingness to work effectively in a multidisciplinary international environment. You will be expected to present results at national and international meetings and to write up results for publication in leading scientific journals.

These are full-time posts for 24 months to start on 1st November 2024, or at a mutually agreed date close to this. Applicants should include a cover letter stating which of the positions they are interested in applying for. Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. Oliver Wild (o.wild@lancaster.ac.uk) or Dr. Ryan Hossaini. Further details on the HYDRA project are available at the HYDRA website, and information on the atmospheric science group at Lancaster is available at lec-atmos.org.
