Applications are welcome for Research Associate / Research Fellow in Data Science in the Division of Informatics, Imaging and Data Sciences, University of Manchester.

The fundamental purpose of NIHR HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) in Emergency and acute care is to transform urgent and emergency care by developing and deploying new technologies for the detection, diagnosis and monitoring of disease and embedding these technologies in the way that health and care services look after patients. The NIHR HRC in Emergency and acute care will bring together companies, NHS clinicians, academics, the public and patients to test and commercialise new healthcare technologies aimed at improving urgent and emergency care in the community and the hospital. These technologies will benefit patients and funders by ensuring that diseases are diagnosed earlier, and appropriate treatments are provided sooner so that patients get optimal care through planned services.

The HRC is comprised of four themes, which will work synergistically to generate the evidence required for novel HealthTech to be approved and adopted into the NHS,

The post holder would be working in theme 4 “understanding the problem”, under the supervision of theme leads Professor Evan Kontopantelis and Dr Alex Thompson.  Theme 4 aims to provide a deep understanding of the population that stands to benefit from an innovation/intervention, current care pathways, the nature and scale of the challenge in terms of health and the economy, and how innovative HealthTech can change this.

You will need a good first degree (2.1 or above) or equivalent in statistics or a relevant discipline and a PhD in health services research, economics, data science or statistics. You will need a solid understanding of mainstream and advanced statistical methodology and experience in applying these methods to complex data. An understanding of the HealthTech regulatory pathway is desirable.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
