Research Fellow in Geospatial Software Engineering for Transport Systems

Look no further - the University of Southampton’s Transportation Research Group have an exciting opportunity for you to join one of the UK’s longest-established centres for transport-related research and education.  

About the role 

You will contribute to applied research that will help deliver railway networks across Europe that have a positive impact on the societies they serve and which help to decarbonise the continent’s transport system. You will work as a researcher on the Quieter Rail project, part of the Europe’s Rail research programme, in collaboration with other researchers both at the University of Southampton and at range of organisations across Europe. You will develop online software tools which can be used to help railway infrastructure managers prioritise interventions that reduce noise and vibration while also minimising whole life costs and carbon emissions.  You will integrate a range of datasets for inclusion in these tools, and develop appraisal methods which can trade off the various impacts of railway infrastructure interventions.

About you

To be successful you will need to be able to demonstrate a track record of using R Shiny to develop online tools and applications, preferably relating to transport systems. You will have a detailed understanding and knowledge of railway systems, and knowledge and experience of geospatial software engineering. You will hold a PhD or equivalent in transport modelling and/or geospatial analysis, and will have a track record of undertaking academic research relating to rail transport and of producing conference presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles.  Experience of analysing noise and vibration in a railway-related context is desirable, as is experience of integrating railway industry datasets and using them for computational modelling and analysis.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
