Sustainability Manager - £53,818 - £59,199 per annum

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional sustainability professional to join our net zero team. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

You’ll be joining a small but very passionate team of sustainability professionals within Net Zero. You’ll be helping us deliver our commitments against our Net Zero strategy and embed sustainability into everything we do.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop your sustainability, leadership and management skills further through training and coaching. 

Duties

As Sustainability Manager you will promote best practice that embeds energy, carbon and wider sustainability considerations into all activities within BAS operations and science delivery. You will help develop guidance and policy documents and offer support to teams across BAS in embedding sustainability criteria into their projects, processes and procurement. You will play a key role in providing technical support to the estates and procurement teams ensuring that the net zero strategy objectives are considered. You will engage with our top 10 suppliers to develop with them common goals and values around sustainability and improve data quality. You will also contribute to data analysis and internal/external carbon reporting with a special focus on scope 3 emissions. The role will also include opportunities for collaboration with teams across UKRI and NERC as well as partner organisations to help deliver the commitments in our BAS Net Zero Strategy and UKRI Sustainability Strategy.

We are currently delivering exciting decarbonisation projects across BAS in Cambridge and Antarctica; from installing renewable energy and energy storage systems, to developing AI/Machine learning tools for operational efficiency, introducing alternative sustainable fuels and trialling new autonomous vehicles for delivering marine and airborne science.

For the role of Sustainability Manager, we are looking for somebody who has ambition, creativity and commitment. You will need to have an analytical approach to working, excellent organisational skills and exceptional written and oral communication skills. You will need to have strong working experience in sustainability with a proven track record in delivering sustainability improvements and carbon reduction for other organisations and extensive experience in data management and data analytics. Experience with sustainability metrics and carbon reporting is also crucial.
