The Role and the Department     

The Department of Earth Sciences hosts the Natural Environment Research Council’s Ocean-Bottom Instrumentation Facility. An exciting and unique opportunity is available to join the Facility and work at the heart of its operations delivering geophysical data acquisition via instrumentation deployed onto the deep ocean seabed. The post holder(s) will set-up instruments for deployment, configure them for data acquisition, assist in sea freight shipping, and take part in data acquisition at sea. They will also be part of the design, development and construction of the next generation of Facility instrumentation.

We are looking for a motivated and confident individual(s) with common sense, able to work independently following instructions, and enthusiastic to learn new skills. Candidates should have a BSc or MSci degree (or equivalent), have demonstrable practical skills, and an attention to detail in note taking, record keeping and in the use of equipment and tools. In return, we offer skills and knowledge training, work on interesting scientific applications, and a unique seagoing experience with foreign travel, all set within the context of forefront geophysical research.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications/Experience

  1. Are qualified to BSc or MSci degree level or equivalent. *
  2. Have experience of working with LJ-type seabed seismographs, including mobilisation, programming and operation in a lab-based setting. *
  3. Have experience of working with T-Rex to archive and convert raw seabed seismograph data to processed form. *
  4. Hold or be able to pass within one month of commencement, an ENG1 Seafarer’s Medical Certificate. *
  5. Hold or be able to pass within one month of commencement, an STCW Seafarer’s Personal Sea Survival Certificate. *
  6. Hold a valid passport with at least than 12 months remaining from the post’s start date.
  7. Have experience of working in a team. 
  8. Have experience of managing own activities to meet deliverables and deadlines.
  9. Have experience of adhering to health and safety procedures appropriate to role.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  1. Have demonstrable practical skills and in the use of equipment and tools.
  2. Have a proven attention to detail in note taking and record keeping.
  3. Have a proven ability to solve problems and deliver appropriate solutions.
  4. Have good spoken and written English communication skills.
  5. Have a proven ability to develop effective working relationships.
  6. Have digital competence across a range of digital devices and software, including linux-based operating systems.
  7. Have a willingness and ability to undertake foreign travel.
  8. Have a willingness and ability to work at sea for periods of up to 6-8 weeks, and for up to 90 days annually.
  9. Have a commitment to continuing professional development.
