A Senior Research Assistant Post is available within the Department of Computer Science in the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire.

PULSE (Profile Unmasking & Linking Software Engine) is a Science & Technology in Policing funded project that aims to advance digital law enforcement capabilities by developing and implementing innovative software solutions utilising machine learning.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Senior Research Assistant will undertake a thorough literature review and assist in collecting and preprocessing data. Additionally, they will collaborate closely with project stakeholders to design, develop and refine a proof-of-concept tool using appropriate machine learning technologies.

The successful applicant will also assist in collating and writing project reports, manage aspects of project administration, and aid in the dissemination of results and outputs from the project. Additionally, they are expected to actively participate in the academic life of the School by engaging in seminars and other relevant events where appropriate.

Skills and experience required

Applicants must be proficient in programming, ideally Python, with experience in machine learning libraries such as Scikit-learn and/or TensorFlow/Keras. The ideal candidate should have understanding of natural language processing tools like NLTK and spaCy and be adept at utilising data analysis and visualisation tools.

The postholder will be flexible and adaptable and the ability to work in a team and within a consortium is essential. Skills such as good oral and written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills are also essential.

Qualifications required

Honours Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification) or higher qualification in a relevant discipline. An MSc or equivalent qualification is desirable.
