The Technical Team in the School of Life and Medical Sciences supports a wide and diverse range of subjects including Biosciences, Pharmacy, Sports Science, Psychology, and Geography, Environment and Planning. Highly skilled technical staff are organized into small specialist teams, who work together alongside academic and research staff.
Main duties and responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for the preparation of materials (including chemicals) and equipment for Practical Bioscience teaching sessions, as well as clearing and safely disposing of materials after sessions are complete. You will be required to maintain laboratories in a clean and tidy state, as well as ensure that equipment is in good condition, safe to use and calibrated as necessary. You will also contribute to the maintenance of equipment inventories and ensure that health and safety practices are implemented and observed.
You will have contact with both undergraduate and postgraduate students at all stages of their learning.
Skills and experience required
An articulate and good communicator, you will be both reliable and a team player, as well as showing initiative and being able to work independently when necessary. You will be able to explain and demonstrate techniques to staff and students, and also be able to follow detailed instructions comprehensively.
You will be flexible, adaptable and reliable with a proactive approach which is methodical with an attention to detail. Good IT, numeracy and timekeeping are all essential.
Practical experience of working in a bioscience laboratory would be an advantage in a technical role, as will knowledge and experience of pharmacology or molecular biology techniques.
Qualifications required
“A” level or equivalent in a science subject, preferably a biological sciences or similar.
A numeracy qualification GCSE Grade D or above, or equivalent.
