Role Summary

We are looking for an experienced medical statistician to join the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit to support the clinical trial research being undertaken by the unit.

The Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) is a leading national clinical trials unit (CTU) within the College of Medicine and Health at the University of Birmingham specialising in the design, conduct and analysis of definitive clinical trials.

Established in 1997, BCTU has evolved into one of the largest and most effective CTUs in the UK specialising in the design, conduct and analysis of definitive clinical trials and test evaluation studies, as well as methodological research, under the directorship of Professor Katie Morris. BCTU’s aim is to help stimulate, develop, conduct, support, analyse and report high quality clinical research to generate more reliable evidence on causes and best treatment of a wide range of diseases.

The post holder will contribute at a senior level to the whole range of research and administration within the Trials Unit and provide statistical advice and support in the design, conduct and analysis of a variety of studies within BCTU. They will contribute to the leadership and management of the BCTU Statistics team, and deputise for the Statistics Team Leader at Unit level meetings.

Person Specification

Qualifications 

  • MSc or PhD in Statistics or a relevant higher degree.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Significant experience of working as an applied medical statistician, with experience of applying advanced statistical techniques for medical problems.
  • Significant knowledge and experience in medical statistics and clinical trials, specifically in the design and writing of study protocols and the analysis, reporting and publication of results.
  • Experience of supervising junior statisticians at a project level.
  • Knowledge of complex clinical trials designs including (but not limited to) adaptive designs, platform trials and Bayesian approaches.
  • Experience in statistical analysis packages and undertaking statistical analysis, preferably in SAS and/or STATA.
  • Demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing statistical aspects of clinical research to deliver high quality results.
  • Experience in writing reports and demonstrated success in the publication of research papers.
  • Experience in teaching and presenting on clinical trial and statistical methodology.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
