The School of Life and Health Sciences is recruiting a Post Doctoral Research Associate to help in the delivery of a project titled ‘Microplastics in groundwater ecosystems: a global impact analysis (PlaStyx)’. This exciting project will enable us to determine the distribution, total quantity and impact of microplastics on groundwater ecosystems.

This role is ideal for someone who is committed to delivering excellent, innovative science. The successful candidate will be a vital part of the project team and co-design and carry out microcosm experiments to determine which groundwater organisms ingest microplastics, whether uptake differs depending on microplastic size and concentration and what effect microplastics have on groundwater food webs.

Key responsibilities will include

  • Conducting microcosm experiments with groundwater animals and microplastics.
  • Measuring the effect of microplastics on the growth rates of groundwater animals using respiration rates as a proxy.
  • Taking part in field work across Europe to collect groundwater samples.
  • Constructing groundwater food webs from these samples and undertaking ecological modelling

The successful candidate will have skills and experience in

  • working with a range of people, including academics and experience of supporting collaborative research
  • research methods relevant to the subject area, such as statistical analysis, food web analysis and flow cytometry
  • the subject area with an emerging record of research and publication in one or more relevant areas such as field ecology, ecological modelling or ecological experiments.
  • excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • A full driving licence and a willingness to drive in Europe. The post requires the candidate to work across various different sites using a company vehicle.
