Contract Type: Permanent

The Department of Music at the University of Southampton invites applications for the new post of Lecturer in Sustainable Music Business. This is a permanent appointment, at entry level, on a full-time ‘balanced’ contract (40% teaching, 40% research, 20% leadership, management and engagement), tenable from 1 January 2025, but with a flexible start date.

You'll have a PhD, or be about to receive one, and have begun to acquire higher education teaching experience. Your emerging research programme will engage with any aspect of music studies related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These might include critical infrastructure studies, cultural policy management, cultural economics, music and social inequalities (including gendered, classed, racialised, ableist and other oppressions), music and work, music and the Anthropocene or Science and Technology Studies (including AI). At Southampton, you will help deliver our department research strategy, which focusses on “grand challenges” including sustainability, social justice and AI. You will have the potential to apply for funding on your own or as part of larger teams, particularly from UKRI or European Union sources. You will be encouraged to align your work to the strategic goals of the Centre for Music Education and Social Justice, and to seek collaborations with (for example) the Sustainability and Resilience Institute and/or the Centre for Inclusive and Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

You will contribute to delivery of our MA in International Music Management. Detailed knowledge and understanding of trends in the global creative industries, and their structures, is essential; experience in and/or knowledge of the creative and cultural industries in East Asia would be desirable. You will play a key role in our new sustainability-led curriculum at UG level.

You will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects, and support students pastorally as a personal academic tutor. You will supervise PhD students, at first as part of larger teams and eventually as lead supervisor. You will have the ability to adapt your teaching approaches effectively for an international student learning experience.

You will take on a management role appropriate to your experience and expertise, and be mentored by our Director of Programmes, Head of Research and Enterprise, and Head of Department.

You will join a vibrant and forward-looking academic community in the Department of Music at Southampton, a centre of exceptional research and teaching in musicology, ethnomusicology, social justice, performance, composition, music technology, production, music therapy, community music, music education and cultural economics. As a university, we are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equal opportunities. We particularly welcome applications from women, disabled and negatively-racialised colleague and/or candidates from groups who are currently under-represented in our Department.

Please submit your completed application form online at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk .

The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date.

Interviews will take place in October 2024.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to:

Prof Thomas Irvine, Head of Music: T.A.Irvine@soton.ac.uk
