  • Do you have a background in cognitive neuroscience or psychology, an interest in consciousness, and a desire to help people with mental illness? 
  • Applications are invited for a highly motivated student to work as a Research Assistant within the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science (SCCS), an internationally prominent research group in consciousness science and one of the University of Sussex’s Centres of Excellence.
  • The successful applicant will provide research support for Dr David Schwartzman and colleagues on a new project investigating a potential therapy for mild to moderate forms of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) based on the ability of stroboscopic light to create vivid visual experiences.
  • The successful applicant will join a new team funded by project lead Dr Schwartzman’s Medical Research Council (MRC) grant. The project inaugurates a new collaboration between the SCCS (Schwartzman and Professor Anil Seth) and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) with Professor James Stone.
  • The successful applicant will have a background in experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field, and research skills at an appropriate level of qualification, with the ambition to support and pursue high-quality research in this field. Previous experience working with people with mental illness or conducting clinical research, along with strong statistical skills, are highly desirable.
  • A strong interest in the neuroscience of consciousness is also desirable.
