The post
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant to support the work of Dr Ruth Thurstan. This externally funded post is available from 1 October 2024 to 28 March 2025. The successful applicant will conduct archival research on primary literature from the early 19th century onwards, to extract descriptions of historical English marine benthic environments and how these have changed over time. Where the data make it possible, you will also produce simple maps of described extents of marine habitats.
The post will include a review of existing spatio-temporal datasets showing the extent of historical marine habitats and the interrogation of primary literature, including nautical charts, the findings of which will support the production of a written report and a spatial dataset. A trip to London archives during the post is anticipated.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Applicants will be educated to first degree level or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study or equivalent experience and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will have an awareness of historical ecology methods and be comfortable with extracting qualitative and quantitative data from historical archival English-language sources. Experience with spatial software e.g. QGIS is preferred.
