Applicants are invited to apply for the position of Research Associate within the Cardiff School of Engineering. 

The main duty of this role is to conduct research within the Advanced High Voltage Engineering Research Centre in the field of tunnel power cables earthing, safety and protection under electromagnetic transient voltages and currents. The work will examine previous calculations and evaluate the alternative working methods for implementation on practical tunnel project, as well as further investigations to consider various scenarios. The post holder will:

  • Review current practice and recommended working methods
  • Review previous work and consideration of CIGRE methods
  • Carry out modelling of earthing system and verification for induced voltages
  • Carry out modelling of electromagnetic transient of cable conductor and earthing system
  • Investigate the removal of equipotential mats and protection with sheath voltage limiters

The post holder will contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.

This post is full time (35hours per week), available from 01/9/2024 and is fixed term until 31/03/2026.

Salary:  £39,347 - £44,263 per annum (Grade 6 - Research Associate). We do not anticipate appointing this position above point 32, £39,347 per annum.
