Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is becoming the accepted approach on many projects in complex systems and in some areas the approach is mandated for projects. As such, it is essential that the projects are structured and managed in such a way that the full benefits of MBSE are realisable. On the other hand, while practising MBSE expert judgement has been used to evaluate the quality of models, and there is no consensus on the specific characteristics of good quality models.

Co-funded by Leonardo and EPSRC, this project will either focus on (i) how organisational structure could enable more effective use of MBSE on projects; or (ii) how qualities of models can be assessed objectively with particular emphasis on MBSE supporting rapid development of products. The choice of project focus will be agreed between the student, Leonardo and Loughborough University during the first year of the programme.

The project is suitable for students who have a STEM background. The programme includes formal teaching in model-based systems engineering from Loughborough Systems Engineering experts and industrial leaders. Throughout the duration of the programme, the student will be hosted at one of Leonardo’s office locations for the majority of their time. This will provide the student with a suitable working environment, access to necessary infrastructure, and opportunities for interaction with stakeholders. The project will include the opportunity for collaboration on solving complex systems problems.

By completing the EngDoc programme, you will become a future thought leader in a demanding engineering field.

Note also that the successful candidate has to be eligible to obtain an SC (Security Check) Level clearance.

A minimum of an upper-class honours degree (2:1) or overseas equivalent in a STEM subject area, or equivalent relevant industrial experience.
