Overview

Interested in plants and the impact of changing agricultural practices on virus evolution; can this exacerbate emerging disease in crops? Next generation sequencing will explore the diversity of viruses infecting cereals and grasses to understand how genetically tolerant and resistant plant varieties can impact sequence diversity in virus populations in infected plants and clarify knock-on impacts of changing agricultural practices.

Withdrawal of neonicotinoid insecticides has led to re-emergence of aphids and the viruses they transmit; genetic resistance has been introduced as a control measure. This project explores fundamental understanding of deploying tolerant crops at a broad scale, examining impacts of selection pressures on virus evolution and durability of resistance.

The student will work in collaboration with Newcastle University, Fera Science Ltd and KWS, providing a broad perspective on the problem, from academia to industry and government. We will train students to use next generation sequencing and bioinformatics to study plant virus evolution, alongside skills focused on plant pathology, virology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. General soft-skills and research training provided, along with the industry/government connections will provide graduates with the best possible career prospects.
