About the role

  • To provide technical and management leadership of computing operations across the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES).
  • To manage a multidisciplinary computing operations team spanning infrastructure, web development and end-user support.
  • To oversee the management of hybrid infrastructure split between on-prem and the cloud, consisting of web servers, storage, virtual machines and hypervisors.
  • To coordinate the development of the delivery of in-house web applications which are integral to the delivery of activity across our education, research and operations functions.
  • To ensure the delivery of effective end-user support across the teaching and research portfolios.
  • The role will also work closely with colleagues in King’s central IT and e-Research functions to deliver NMES’ technical and functional requirements from central platforms and services.

This is a full time post, offered on an indefinite contract

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Physical or Applied Sciences
  2. Track record of taking technology projects from inception, through governance approvals to delivery
  3. Broad technical knowledge including: Linux operating systems, Web development, Storage, Networking and Windows operating system
  4. Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively convey change, persuade stakeholders, influence decisions, and build consensus across diverse audiences
  5. Development and execution of technical and operational strategic road maps
  6. Track record of good hiring and retaining technical staff, staff development, performance management and effective team structuring
  7. Comprehend new technologies quickly, effective management of highly technical staff, establishing balance of trust and technical oversight
  8. Ability to operate teams with minimal supervision from upper management

Desirable criteria

  1. Good understanding of DevOps/SRE philosophies
  2. Software development and/or configuration management experience (python, Puppet, Ansible, etc)
  3. Building cultures of growth and innovation
  4. Budget management
  5. Technical change and incident management
