Job Summary

We are looking to recruit an outstanding, committed and enthusiastic Research Associate to work on the ADVANCE-TBI study. The ‘ADVANCE’ (ArmeD SerVices TrAuma RehabilitatioN OutComE) Study is a prospective cohort study of the long-term medical and psychosocial outcomes of UK Servicemen who were seriously injured in the conflict in Afghanistan. Using the latest technologies including MRI (3T/7T) and fluid biomarkers, the study aims to longitudinally investigate brain health consequences of traumatic brain injury in this cohort. You will also have the opportunity to work on aligned projects where similar data is being collected, including the Advanced Brain Health Clinic project where 400+ retired footballers and rugby players are being assessed for long term outcomes.

This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of a world-class research team based at the UK Dementia Research Institute Care Research & Technology (CR&T) Centre at Imperial College London and contribute to cutting edge research into how brain injuries relate to long-term neurodegenerative disease, cognitive and neuropsychiatric outcomes. You will be working with lead scientists in the field, explore new research avenues in the area within the team and will be offered excellent training opportunities. 

Duties and responsibilities 

  • You will lead on the management and data flow of MR images/reports collected within the ADVANCE study at varies research sites.
  • You will manage and develop neuroimaging data analysis pipelines for use on large scale data.
  • You will integrate data analysis approaches across a range of datasets including ADVANCE and ABHC, as well as externally collected such as UK Biobank.
  • You will provide regular updates and reports to the ADVANCE Senior Project Manager and ADVANCE TBI team.
  • You will assist with the analysis of data.
  • You will work towards publication of findings.
  • You will attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary.
  • You will develop contacts with external study co-investigators, the College and the wider community.
  • You will promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience of neuroimaging data processing and manipulation.
  • Experience in use of coding software including matlab, R and/or python.
  • High-level knowledge of existing neuroimaging packages e.g. FSL, Freesurfer, SPM etc.
  • Knowledge of neurological / cognitive / psychiatric assessments and methods.
  • Previous experience in a research clinical environment.
  • Ability to be independent, self-motivated, and able to work collaboratively.
  • Creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication.

Further Information

This position is a full-time fixed-term contract for two years in the first instance. You will be based at the White City Campus (hybrid).
