The University of Glasgow is seeing a Professor of Education and Research Director within the School of Education.

The 25th anniversary of the School of Education marks an important juncture for shaping our future as a world leader in education research, aspiring to address the pressing issues of our times. Founded through the merger of two university departments and a teacher education college, the scale, diversity and reach of our research environment has rapidly evolved during this period. We are now one of the largest and most intellectually diverse schools of education in the UK, encompassing a multidisciplinary portfolio of applied and conceptual educational research, spanning all stages of formal and informal education, adult education and community development. Our academic staff counts 170 full-time equivalent posts, with active researchers by far the majority. The pace of change has been rapid with number of research active staff doubling since 2018. The most recent HESA data reveals our portfolio of external research funding to be the 5th largest in the UK.

We believe the diversity of intellectual traditions and research methods in the School better equips us to address pressing questions in education research, and experience tells us intellectual complementarities emerge in unforeseen ways. A third of our academic staff were appointed in the last three years, and we will continue to bring in new people to build on these synergies and grow our thriving research culture.

We want our School to be a place where great ideas can flourish and evolve into world-changing research. We strive to cultivate a vibrant and supportive community of education academics that offers our researchers plenty of space to create, collaborate and connect, organised across our four research and teaching groups, two research centres and various networks. We believe in the complementarity of research and teaching. Through relationships with practitioners, policy makers, learners, educators, families, and communities we can discover questions we don’t yet know to ask.

Our impact is global. Through ongoing collaborations with more than 200 organisations around the world, we seek to position educational research as part of a multidisciplinary agenda to support the development of more equitable societies.

We are proud to have been recognised for our efforts to develop a supportive culture and an environment where our researchers can thrive. Our most recent REF submission saw over 90% of our work judged as either world leading or internationally excellent. In the Times Higher Education Rankings 2024 for Education, we placed joint 1st in the UK overall as well as 1st in Scotland for research quality. Since 2019, the School has been consistently rated top 50 in the QS World University Ranking.
