About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Beamline scientist/Senior Beamline scientist working in the area of condensed matter physics research. The position is based on beamline I06, which offers polarised x-ray spectroscopy and microscopy.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Operate and manage a PhotoEmission Electron Microscope (PEEM) and Low-Energy Electron Microscope (LEEM) facility.
  • Enable novel research in condensed matter physics and physical chemistry, working with national and international researchers and act as a single point of contact for user experiments, providing technical and scientific advice.
  • Collaborate on equipment upgrades and development projects, including taking specific responsibility for certain components of the equipment.
  • Develop an independent research programme in an area relevant to the capabilities of the I06 facilities and disseminate the results through publications and conferences.

About You
You will hold an appropriate first degree or equivalent and a PhD degree/Second degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or related discipline.

Experience in quantum materials research, electron microscopes, ultrahigh vacuum and polarised x-ray techniques are required for this post. You should be able to demonstrate an established reputation in a relevant area of research along with a track record of developing scientific equipment.

As well as experience in the following areas:

  • Relevant PEEM/Electron Microscope.
  • Maintaining scientific instrumentation.
  • Scientific data collection.

For the Senior position, as well as the above you will have experience in the following:

  • Synchrotron radiation research.
  • Python programming for data analysis.
  • Supporting scientists in a facility.
  • Effectively engage with and manage a small team.
