About us

UCL’s Department of Computer Science (CS) is a top-ranked Computer Science Department in the UK. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) evaluation, UCL Computer Science was ranked second in the UK for research power and first in England.

The Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC: http://cmic.cs.ucl.ac.uk), and Dept. of Computer Science (UCL-CS: http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk) at University College London (UCL: http://www.ucl.ac.uk) is offering a new post-doctoral research position to work on identifying imaging-based disease subtypes in patients with lung fibrosis.

About the role

The project is to identify imaging features of lung and cystic fibrosis predictive of mortality or decline in lung function tests on computed tomography images at the Centre for Medical Image Computing at UCL.

The duties and responsibilities will include developing algorithms (for example using CNNs) for automatic or semi-automatic extraction of CT features (texture, histogram, structure) on a lobar basis, from lung CT imaging. The candidate will be expected to undertake research and development according to the work-plan of this collaborative project, and in particular to apply scientific rigour to this activity.

The role will be funded until the 31st August 2026 in the first instance.

About you

The candiate should have a completed PhD, or close to obtaining a PhD, in the field of medical image computing, machine learning or related imaging field. The candidate should have experience of working in one or more of the following areas: computational imaging, machine learning, medical image analysis and image registration and experience in scientific programming using Matlab, C, C++, Java or another widely used high-level programming language. A demonstrable record of publications and presentations at scientific meetings is desirable as is experience in applying machine learning techniques (such as random forests, deep neural networks) in imaging and using open-source image analysis libraries (e.g. ITK). Given the nature of the project, experience of working within a clinical environment or closely with medical staff is desirable.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
