College Teaching Officer in Law

St Edmund’s College (Cambridge) invites applications for a full-time College Lecturer and Fellow in Law to commence on 1st October 2024.

We seek to appoint an early-career scholar with an active research programme and a commitment to teaching excellence. Intended to offer an early-career scholar the opportunity to develop a competitive teaching and research portfolio, the post will be subject to a probation review at 6 months and will be offered initially on a 3-year fixed term contract.

The successful candidate will be eligible for election to a Fellowship in St Edmund’s College, to run conterminously with the appointment as College Lecturer, and would be expected to take an active role in the intellectual life and governance of the College, and to direct studies when required (for which an additional stipend will be offered).

The post also qualifies for an annual Research Allowance of £1,000 in addition to the annual salary.

Key duties & responsibilities

  • Providing supervisions (small-group teaching of 2-4 undergraduates) – for an average of 12 hours/week (excluding the time required for preparation and marking essays) during the 20 teaching weeks of the academic year.
  • Conducting and publishing research of the standard required for submission to the Research Excellence Framework
  • Assessing candidates for admissions as undergraduates and postgraduates in Law
  • Leading outreach activities for prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students in Law
  • Contributing to enrichment activities for current students in Law
  • Participating in the governance, intellectual community, and social life of the College in accord with the expectations for all College Fellows
  • Work with colleagues to share best practise and ensure policies are adhered to
  • Suggest and implement new ways of working and ideas, be an advocate for Continuous Improvement.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Complete ad hoc tasks as required

Person Specification

Essential

  • Relevant and recent teaching experience and a commitment to teaching excellence
  • An active research programme
  • Hold a PhD in law or expect to complete all requirements for the PhD before the start date, or have equivalent experience in legal practice.
  • Able to offer teaching in at least two of the following subjects:
    • Land Law
    • Law of Contract
    • Criminal Law
    • Law of Tort
    • Constitutional law

Preference will be given to candidates to candidates who are able to offer teaching in the Law of Contract and Land Law. Further details about undergraduate study in the Faculty of Law is available on the faculty website: www.ba.law.cam.ac.uk.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a collegiate environment such as the University of Cambridge
  • Experience of teaching and/or working closely with people from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities including mature students
  • Desire to become fully part of the college community at St Edmund’s including a willingness to take the lead in organising extra-curricular activities and events (such as dinners and moots) for the College’s cohort of law students
