High Containment Laboratory Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) Weybridge Headquarters for the right individual to deliver a key role in health and safety/estates management within the Bacteriology Department. Your work will underpin the delivery of a wide scope of routine and emergency response diagnostic work, reference laboratory activities and research studies so your role is critical in protecting animal and public health.

We are looking for individuals with a good grounding in practical laboratory work and delivering a safe working environment. Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent communication and team working skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Applicants must have a broad knowledge of bacterial detection and diagnostic methods, including bacteriological culture. Experience of biological containment work is important for this role, together with a willingness to work with exotic bacteria.

The Weybridge site is a strategically important national asset due to its role as a reference laboratory supporting the Government’s response to national emergencies including disease outbreaks. For this reason all post holders based at the APHA Weybridge site must hold a valid Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) security clearance or above. It is up to each person applying for a post at APHA Weybridge to ensure they meet the CTC residency criteria. Applicants must be currently resident in the UK & have at least 3 years continuous UK residency.
