PhD Studentship: Future-proofing housing developments to mitigate climate change

More than half of the world’s population is urban, with projections indicating a rise to 68% by 2050. In alignment with this, the UK aims to boost housing supply of 300,000 homes per year. However, existing sustainability standards have been deemed insufficient in mitigating the impacts of climate change-induced overheating and lack the necessary sophistication to consider the building performance implications of individual design typologies and site planning. 

To ensure future-proofing of new-build homes in large scale developments and contribute to the advancement of sustainable housing practices in the UK, this PhD project will:

• Identify and evaluate sustainable building design typologies (at building and site scale using building energy modelling) that demonstrate best practices in mitigating the impacts of climate change and promoting environmental sustainability within new-build developments.
• Create a design decision-making toolkit with practical guidelines for implementing sustainable design solutions in new housing developments.

 The studentship is for three years and provides a tax-free stipend of £19,237 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.
