The UK has invested significant funding to transition quantum theories into quantum products to create a quantum-enabled economy within the next 10 years, to revolutionise healthcare, energy, transport, and many other sectors.

NPL, the UK’s national metrology institute, is developing a fully functioning, thoroughly characterised, local area quantum network (QLAN) linking heterogeneous nodes across its site. It will make this testbed available to users for testing hardware and applications. NPL will lead on the testing and security evaluation of the testbed and collaborate widely on the technology development.

Funded by the National Physical Laboratory, this project will aim to develop novel approaches, methods and tools to facilitate the design of this network as it evolves and verification of its performance, or specific aspects of it, contributing to the overall assurance of the quantum network.

The projects are suitable for students who have either an engineering or a physics background. The programme includes formal teaching in model-based systems engineering from Loughborough Systems Engineering experts and industrial leaders. The project will include the opportunity for collaboration on solving complex systems problems.

By completing the EngDoc programme, you will become a future thought leader in a rapidly growing area of technology.
