The Opportunity:

Develop ecological understanding of viruses of methane cycling prokaryotes in peatlands. This is to be achieved using metagenomics, viromics, methane flux analysis and population dynamics modelling in collaboration with a large international team funded by Human Frontier Science Program.

This post is fixed term (36 months) and full-time (35 hours per week), however, we are open to considering flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

Your skills and attributes for success: Relevant PhD or equivalent experience in microbial ecology, microbiology, bioinformatics, computational biology

  • Knowledge of microbial community ecology and interactions and an up-to-date understanding of the science of the biogeochemical cycling of elements and microbial controls
  • A high standard of programming skills relevant to microbial sequencing data analysis and ability to effectively manage and process large data sets
  • Good organisational skills and ability to work independently under appropriate supervision to a high academic standard, in addition to team-working
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, orally and in writing
